Science communication

Dr. Josiane Meier
Project manager

We came across Franziska and her impressive work in science, science communication and diversity in our search for mentors who could assist young researchers in becoming active Wikipedians during weekend-long hackathons that took place in the context of our project “Hack the Wiki Gap – Innovative Frauen sichtbar machen” (“Hack the Wiki Gap – making innovative women visible”. The task at hand was to support the participants in identifying women who were missing in Wikipedia, in ensuring that the women qualify as relevant, in researching robust information about the women and in authoring encyclopedic articles about them by using the Wikipedia interface (visual and source code editors). Franziska was a mentor and team member at two of these intense workshops – and what a mentor and team member she was! She was already very engaged and foresightful in her preparation for the workshops – and this continued seamlessly during the workshops and throughout the follow-up. During the workshops, Franziska exhibited superb mentoring skills, consistently supporting our participants in their diverse and individual work processes with deep kindness, patience, skill and efficiency. She proved herself as a great problem solver and creative mentor who consistently offered innovative solutions and went above and beyond to assist our participants in overcoming the challenges they faced. Through her professional and kind communication, she fostered a positive and collaborative work and learning environment – and was always quick to see ways in which she could contribute to the success of the workshops as a whole, even beyond her role as a mentor. In all dimensions of her work, Franziska demonstrated a strong commitment to the project’s success and remained interested even after the workshops were concluded. With her proven skills in communication and problem-solving as well as her reliability and empathetic nature, I have no doubt that Franziska is exceptionally well-suited for roles involving project leadership or team management. Her dedication to our diversity project was instrumental to its success, and I have no doubt she will excel in any position she pursues in the future. It would be a pleasure to work with her again! – Josiane Meier

Dr. Vira Iefremova
Researcher, University of California, Berkeley

In July 2020, Franziska invited me as a guest speaker at her unique SciComm formate “Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft” (which can be roughly translated from German as a conversation about science over a coffee). It is quite usual for a lot of Germans to go for a coffee with friends and family on Sunday afternoon, and have a relaxed time together exchanging the latest news. And Franziska made a perfect combination of usual Sunday coffee time and SciComm, where talking about complex scientific matters becomes an easy-going and pleasant exchange over a coffee. Typically, this event would have been held at the Natural History Museum Berlin (Museum für Naturkunde), but due to restrictions connected to the ongoing pandemic, the event was transferred to the online platform. Both Franziska and the Museum prepared perfectly for the event and equipped with delicious coffee and a cake I was thrilled to share my experience in science and my ongoing research. Franziska’s passion for science and a strong belief that science is for everyone make this format especially appealing for a broader audience. I enjoyed it to the fullest both as a speaker and as an attendee of other events from the “Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft” series. I strongly recommend participating! – Vira Iefremova

Anna Taranko
Doctoral candidate at Charité/
German Rheumatism Research Centre and chairperson of Nutrition Network Potsdam

In May 2020 Franziska invited me to an interview in her amazing SciComm event series ‘Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft’ (which can be translated as coffee party with science).
A German coffee party is always something relaxed, in a comfy and personal atmosphere and of course Franziska wanted to keep this atmosphere when transferring from an on-site to the digital event. Without further ado, she invited me over to stream the interview from her couch in a personal setting. Both, Franziska and the Natural History Museum Berlin (Museum für Naturkunde), organized everything perfectly for the event. Supported by her lovely home-made cake and a wonderful hot cup of tea (I’m sorry – even though it is a coffee party, I still prefer tea over coffee), I answered all her questions how I became a scientist and gave my talk about my research area. She is very passionate and committed to science communication and me as well as the audience can feel that. It makes her Kaffeeklatsch to a very special event where she invites speakers from different scientific research areas. I highly recommend participating – as speaker and/or as member of the audience. – Anna Taranko

Dr. Tristan (Bunn) MacLean
Director of Operations for Canada’s Permafrost Partnership Network & Outreach Officer at Science Borealis

I met Franziska in late 2020 when I started supervising her as Outreach Manager for Science Borealis. With Science Borealis we provide exposure, platforms and training to help science communicators share stories about Canadian science.

Franziska has been so instrumental in reviving our Facebook and designing profiles for all our members – giving our brand a real face. She’s been so positive and proactive, it’s had a noticeable effect on everyone, making us feel like a real team even though we’re spread out all over Canada and the world. Everywhere she goes she makes a difference, and you can see the energy and passion she has in all the initiatives she is involved in, like founding “Science Communication Café (Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft)” and volunteering with other science communication formats. – Tristan MacLean

Dr. Helena Hartman
Social Neuroscientist
Department for Cognition, Emotion, and Methods in Psychology of the University of Vienna

Franziska Sattler invited me to and hosted “Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft” in an online format. Very early on, I felt that she had great sense of organization, informed me about the most important points for the event as a speaker and answered all of my questions immediately. I was specifically impressed that she thoroughly informed herself about my research and prepared multiple questions that made the event to something really valuable and special for everyone. Not only did she manage everything perfectly on the administrative end together with the team of the museum, but she also created a warm and friendly atmosphere during the event itself, where it felt more like a casual chat with friends. Her (and my) enthusiasm also transferred to the audience, who asked multiple questions and was very engaged. Lastly, I want to highlight her great sense of social media promotion of such events. I would 100% recommend hiring Franziska to plan, organize and host events about science communication (or any related outreach format), especially because she, as a scientist, is able to understand and relate to both sides (host and speaker). – Helena Hartmann

Dr. Laura Veldenz
Aerospace engineer/
Pint of Science Germany National Team

I’ve been working together with Franzi since 2017, we both volunteer to make Pint of Science Germany happen. Before I joined she has done a brilliant job in organising events in Berlin, for which feedback has been excellent. When I joined, she stepped up to take the responsibility to fill the national social media accounts with life. It’s a very important aspect in making our organisation visible and she has achieved a high increase in followers (from almost none to over 1000 followers in 2 years). she responds to occasional negative, and sometimes unreasonable feedback very professionally. As the organisation is growing she took additional responsibility to teach and advise the central team and other city teams on how to engage with the public through social media most efficiently. I have enjoyed working with her tremendously, she is well organised, communicates excellently and manages her tasks very efficiently. Pint of Science Germany would not be the same without her! – Laura Veldenz

Dr. Viktoria Korzhova

I know Franziska for a few years already due to her Twitter account and our common interest in science communication. In 2018 we also got to work together on the Pint of Science festival, as Franziska was a city coordinator of the events in Berlin, while as was part of the Germany national team. She did a great job organizing everything in a very short time from securing the location and finding speakers to advertising the events (making great use of social media!), and all of that made Pint of Science events in Berlin a great success. From my personal interaction with Franziska, I would also like to mention that she is a very open-minded person with a great passion for science communication and outreach. I hope that we get to work on the next issues of Pint of Science together with her as long as she is in Berlin. – Viktoria Korzhova

Every event follows a different topic, keeping us always interested and learning. – Marta Alirangues Núñez

Dr. Anna Henschel
Project Manager at Wissenschaft im Dialog

Franziska Sattler is one of the most hard-working and engaged individuals that I have encountered in the world of professional science communication. While we initially connected online, I was quickly invited by Franziska to join the organising team of Soapbox Science, a group of early career researchers in Berlin that empower women to communicate science in the public sphere: literally getting on a soapbox to explain their research to a general audience – the passersby that happen upon them. Both in her Soapbox Science work, and the many other initiatives she organises (like Pint of Science, or her own science communication format Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft/ the Science Communication Cafe), I have come to know Franziska as an incredibly well organised, warm-hearted and enthusiastic science communication professional. I hope we will continue to work together and collaborate in the future! – Dr. Anna Henschel

Dr. Diana Alatriste González
Biomedical Research Scientist

I had the chance to collaborate with Franziska as a guest speaker in her science communication format ‘Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft’ for the Museum of Natural History in Berlin, and it was a great experience. It was actually my first time participating in such a format, but Franzi’s experience and professionalism made it a really enjoyable experience, and something I look forward to do more often in the future. Prior to the event, the communication was always efficient and punctual. She made sure to outline the guidelines and requirements for my talk and to introduce me to other people involved in the project. I always felt supported byt her and the team and my concerns/questions were always properly addressed. On the actual day of the event, we met half an hour before to guarantee everything was running smoothly and it felt very comfortable. I even forgot I was talking in front of a big audience! I find Franziska’s format both important and necessary. Science tends to be seen as intimidating by the people outside the field, but having a platform such as this one, where we scientist are also challenged to talk about what we do in a way that is understood and relatable, is crucial. I look forward to our next collaboration and can definitely recommend collaborating with her! – Dr. Diana Alatriste González
